Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a diamond shape divided into nine alternating light blue and white smaller diamond shapes, surmounted overall by a scarlet Greek cross, at the top a semi-circular maroon scroll, folded back at each side and inscribed PROHIBITIO; at base a similar scroll inscribed MORBI CURATIO all in gold letters.  (The areas between emblem and scroll are pierced).

Symbolism
The Greek cross, a symbol of aid and assistance, is used to represent the Medical Activity.  The alternating diamond shapes, light blue and white, were suggested by the coat of arms of Bavaria and symbolize the organizations location at Augsburg.  There are nine diamond shapes; the number nine in numerology is the symbolic number par excellence in medicine; and it represents triple synthesis, the disposition in each plane of the corporal, intellectual and spiritual worlds of man.  The number nine also symbolizes the intermediate steps in the system that converts diagnosis into treatment.  Maroon and white are colors used for the Army Medical Department.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 1 July 1976.
